Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog. Today, I’ll take you along with me on a day trip to two of İzmir’s most famous destinations: Alaçatı and Çeşme. This trip was full of colorful streets, historical sights, and a few personal thoughts I’d love to share with you.
🚌 How We Got There
We started our journey from Fahrettin Altay, where we first took a bus to Urla. From there, we transferred to another bus heading to Çeşme. It was a long route with transfers, so be prepared if you plan to go by public transportation.
📍 First Stop: Alaçatı
Our first destination was Alaçatı, famous for its stone houses, cobbled streets, and windmills. As soon as we arrived, we started wandering through the narrow, colorful streets.
We visited the Alaçatı Bazaar, checked out local crafts, and bought a few souvenirs.
The windmills, one of the town’s most iconic symbols, offered lovely photo spots.
We spent around three hours exploring the center and relaxing in cafés.
While Alaçatı is picturesque and lively, I personally found it a bit too crowded and touristy — especially for a weekday!
🏰 Second Stop: Çeşme
After Alaçatı, we hopped on a bus and headed to Çeşme. The streets of Çeşme felt more elegant and open compared to Alaçatı.
We walked through the stylish streets all the way down to the seaside.
The highlight of our visit was definitely the Çeşme Castle. It offers both a historical museum and a panoramic view of the coastline.
The castle gives you insights about the region’s strategic role during Ottoman and Genoese periods.
We ended our visit with a peaceful moment watching the sea from the top of the castle walls.
📝 My Honest Thoughts
While both Alaçatı and Çeşme are often described as "must-see" places in İzmir, I personally felt a bit underwhelmed.
The trip was long and tiring, especially using public transport.
Alaçatı felt overly commercial and didn’t quite match the charm I had expected from all the hype.
Çeşme was more enjoyable, especially the historical richness of the castle, but again, it didn't feel like a place I would rush back to.
I’d say they’re better suited for overnight stays rather than day trips — to truly enjoy the ambiance without being rushed.
✅ Final Tips for Visitors
If you’re planning to go, consider renting a car to save time.
Weekdays are better to avoid tourist crowds, but still expect it to be busy.
Don’t miss the Çeşme Castle, even if you're just passing by!
